What should I inspect on an ATV or side-by-side at auction?
Check the frame welds for cracks, especially around the A-arms and roll cage mounting points (UTVs). Inspect CV boot condition — torn boots mean contaminated joints that will need replacing soon. Check brake pad thickness and rotor condition. For belt-driven CVT models (Polaris, Can-Am), ask when the belt was last replaced and inspect the drive system for clutch wear. Engine oil condition (milky = water ingestion) is a quick health check.
What are the differences between sport ATVs and utility ATVs at auction?
Sport ATVs (Yamaha YFZ450, Honda TRX450R) are built for performance riding on closed courses — they have manual transmissions, sport-tuned suspension, and minimal cargo capacity. Utility ATVs (Polaris Sportsman, Can-Am Outlander) prioritize hauling, towing, and trail riding with automatic transmissions and wider geometry. Side-by-sides (UTVs) seat 2–4 passengers and are most popular for farm, hunting, and family recreation.
Do ATVs and side-by-sides require titles or registration?
Most states don't require titles for ATVs since they're off-road vehicles, but about 30 states do require registration. Side-by-sides over 1,000cc may require a title and registration in some states. Street-legal UTV kits (mirrors, lights, turn signals, DOT tires) allow registration as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) in some states, allowing road use up to 35 mph.
What is the expected maintenance schedule for a used side-by-side?
Most UTV manufacturers recommend oil changes every 25–50 hours, belt inspection every 50 hours (and replacement every 200–500 hours depending on use), air filter service every 25 hours in dusty conditions, and coolant flush every 2 years. A used side-by-side with unknown maintenance history should receive a full service (oil, filter, belt inspection, brake fluid flush) before use. Budget $200–$400 for a dealer service interval.
