Frequently Asked Questions

The roof is top priority — inspect every seam, vent, and AC base for soft spots indicating water intrusion. Water damage is the number one cause of major RV repairs and often hides under flooring and inside walls. Test all appliances (furnace, water heater, refrigerator, AC), the generator, and both the 12V and 120V electrical systems. Check the chassis frame rails on motorhomes for rust or cracks.
A professional NRVIA-certified RV inspector charges $300–$600 and will spend 3–6 hours inspecting the unit. It is absolutely worth it on any RV over $10,000. Common findings on "as-is" auction RVs include failed roof seams ($500–$5,000 to repair), bad water heater element ($150), and delaminated sidewalls ($3,000–$15,000). An inspector fee can save you tens of thousands.
Banks and credit unions offer RV loans for units in good condition with clear titles. LightStream, Good Sam Finance Center, and Bank of the West specialize in RV loans. Note that most RV lenders won't finance units over 10–15 years old or salvage-title units. If you're buying an older or high-mileage motorhome, plan for a cash purchase or personal loan rather than an RV-specific loan.
Class A motorhomes are bus-style (22–45 feet), the largest and most expensive. Class B are converted vans, most fuel-efficient and easiest to drive. Class C are cab-over designs on truck chassis, mid-size and popular. Fifth wheels require a pickup with a special hitch in the bed. Travel trailers need a proper weight-distribution hitch. Each class has very different insurance, licensing, and storage requirements.
