Check the frame and tongue for cracks, welds, and rust — especially at high-stress points where the tongue meets the main rails. Verify the coupler size matches your hitch ball (1-7/8", 2", or 2-5/16"). Test the brake controller connection if it's a brake-equipped trailer. On enclosed trailers, check the roof seams and floor for water damage and rot.

Title requirements vary by state and trailer weight. Most states require titles for trailers over 1,500–3,000 lbs GVWR. When buying on eBay, confirm the seller will provide a clean title in their name. Never buy a trailer on a bill of sale only if your state requires a title — you'll have trouble registering it. Check your state's DMV website for the specific threshold.

Always buy more capacity than you think you need. A trailer rated at 7,000 lbs GVWR typically has a 5,500–6,000 lb payload capacity once you subtract the trailer's own weight. GVWR ratings should match or exceed what your tow vehicle is rated to pull. For car hauling, you need at least 7,000 lbs GVWR for most passenger vehicles; larger SUVs and trucks need 10,000+ lb trailers.

Look closely at tire sidewalls for cracking (trailers sit unused and tires age out before wearing out — replace any trailer tire over 5 years old). Check the wiring harness connection point for corrosion. On open car haulers and flatbeds, verify the decking boards aren't rotted or broken. On enclosed trailers, look at the rear ramp operation and hinge condition.
