In-season (November–March) listings attract more competition and higher bids, especially during strong snow years. If you're buying off-season, confirm the sled was stored properly: drained float bowls on carb models, fuel stabilizer added, and battery on a tender. Inspect carefully after winter storage.

2-stroke engines (Ski-Doo E-TEC, Polaris Cleanfire, Yamaha 2-stroke) are lighter, more powerful per displacement, and dominate performance and mountain categories. They require oil injection or premix and have more frequent top-end service intervals. 4-stroke engines (Yamaha Genesis, Ski-Doo ACE, Arctic Cat 4-stroke) are quieter, require no premix, and have longer service intervals — ideal for touring and utility use. 4-strokes add significant weight (30–60 lbs) which matters for mountain riding.

Most states require snowmobile registration but not a traditional title — instead, you receive a registration certificate. Some states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan) do issue titles for snowmobiles. When buying on eBay, confirm the seller will provide a current registration or certificate of ownership. In states without titles, a bill of sale from the seller is critical for future registration. Always verify the VIN on the tunnel matches the paperwork before bidding.
